Principle

QIAsymphony technology combines the speed and efficiency of silica- or NI-NTA-based purificationwith the convenient handling of magnetic particles. With exceptional process safety, sample volumes up to 1 ml,^†  and a broad application range for RNA, DNA, and protein purification, the QIAsymphony SP sets a new milestone in automated sample technologies.

New level of ease of use

The QIAsymphony SP is ready-to-run and requires only minimal installation. Instrument setup for a run of 96 samples can be performed in just a few minutes, enabling efficient use of your time. Innovative, prefilled and sealed reagent cartridges are automatically opened by the instrument at the beginning of a run helping to minimize the risk of contamination (see figure "Prefilled, Sealed Reagent Cartridges"). Simply load samples, reagent cartridges, and preracked consumables into the appropriate drawers before the protocol starts. Select the protocol using the integrated touchscreen and remove purified nucleic acids or proteins from the eluate drawer after processing a single batch or the whole run.

Unrivaled application range

QIAsymphony Kits increase laboratory efficiency since just a few kits in combination with optimized protocols cover an extensive range of starting materials and applications (see table "Flexible processing of a wide range of samples"). Sample volumes of up to 1000 μl and up to 50 mg of tissue or 10⁷ cells can be processed, providing increased nucleic acid yields for gene expression and genomics applications and higher sensitivity in virology and microbiology applications.

Flexibility for seamless workflow integration

The sample input drawer accommodates a wide range of sample input formats to suit varying workflow and sample preparation requirements (see figure "Wide Variety of Sample Input Formats"). By using the appropriate tube or plate rack, a variety of tube and plate types can be loaded, including bar code labeled primary tubes from 10-16.9 mm or 96-well plates or blocks. Tubes in 4 racks of 24 samples supplemented by a fifth rack for internal controls or up to four 96-well plates or blocks can be placed in the sample input drawer. Bar codes are automatically read as the sample carrier slides into the instrument, enabling sample tracking throughout the purification process.

Choice of elution formats

Purified nucleic acids or proteins are eluted into tubes or plates (see figure "Choice of Elution Formats"). Four different positions for microtitre plates or tube racks are available and eluates can also be cooled. Eluates can be removed from the output drawer at the end of the protocol run or after a batch of 24 samples has been processed - providing added flexibility.

Advanced process safety 

With its innovative design, the QIAsymphony SP delivers exceptional process safety and standardized sample preparation. Safety features such as enhanced liquid-level detection and clot detection contribute to the robustness of the purification procedure. In addition, tip guards help to minimize the risk of cross-contamination and an integrated UV light enables decontamination of the worktable. Automatic recognition of prefilled reagent cartridges combined with a detailed inventory scan helps to ensure that the system has everything it needs for the protocol (see figure "Advanced Process Safety") delivering true walkaway automation.
